Can someone explain Washington D.C.?

Okay, so it's no where near washington, it's not in columbia it's not in a state, but it's our nations capitol. so it's not in a state, so it just doesn't belong to anywhere? it's kinda like a rebel city? is it even a city? does it even lie in any state's territory? i just dont understand.
