Are Americans weak minded and driven by irrationality when concerning the current economy?

Unemployment at normal levels, foreclosures at high levels, but affecting a tiny fraction of home owners, education available to nearly anyone, 30 years of prosperity, with normal fluctuations, why all the doom and gllom?
